“Really fantastic stuff, perfect for the spooky season. The town and the spooky creatures truly come to life. This one is special."
—Ryan Billingsley, DadSuggests.com

There is nothing Hazel loves more than autumn, the spookiest season. But why doesn't anyone else seem to care?

When nobody in her town seems to share her love of the spooky season, Hazel is left feeling alienated, alone, and unable to express herself. Everything changes when Hazel receives a visit from Ronnie Pumpkinseed, a supernatural pumpkin-headed ambassador for all things spooky. Ronnie teaches Hazel a special word for what she feels inside—Halloween!—and helps Hazel find the courage to be herself and follow her heart, even when it's scary.

Author Kyle Sullivan’s most Halloween-forward book yet (which is saying a lot!), Hazel and the Spooky Season is packed with iconic Halloween scenes and characters, as brought to adorably eerie life by British illustrator Jess Mason.

Reviews and Accolades

“Hazy Dell Press and author Kyle Sullivan bring yet another delightfully spooky and fun picture book to life in Hazel and the Spooky Season. The rhythmic rhymes carry the reader through a night with Hazel, lover of all things spooky, as she learns that she can be herself and share her love of spooky things with new friends. Ronnie Pumpkinseed, a pumpkin-headed specter, introduces Hazel to the concept of Halloween, and by putting on a Halloween spectacular in the graveyard, brings other kids who share Hazel's interests to celebrate and bond. Beautiful art by Jess Mason enhances the story's spooky fun. Chilling and thrilling, this is a perfect addition to any
children's collection.”

—Kristin Jones, Children’s Library Director, Rogers Public Library

“Fantastically hilarious.”
—School Library Journal

“A fresh twist on a beloved fable…It gets wilder and weirder as the story goes on. With its tongue-twisting-tall-tale-ness, it’s a MUST read-aloud book.”
—Illustoria Magazine

Sullivan’s clever concept effectively flips the script on the classic tale. The memorable twist is up to par with the one in Mo Willems’ That Is Not a Good Idea…Meg Hunt’s illustrations are filled with whimsical background details. The staging and facial expressions give the proceedings an animated-movie feel.”
